Premiere Engagement!

(2017) dir Jeff Baena w/Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Kate Micucci, Aubrey Plaza, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, Jemima Kirke, Nick Offerman, Paul Reiser [90 min; DCP]
Medieval nuns Alessandra (Brie), Fernanda (Plaza), and Ginevra (Micucci) lead a simple life in their convent. Their days are spent chafing at monastic routine, spying on one another, and berating the estate’s day laborer. After a particularly vicious insult session drives the peasant away, Father Tommasso (Reilly) brings on new hired hand Massetto (Franco), a virile young servant forced into hiding by his angry lord. Introduced to the sisters as a deaf-mute to discourage temptation, Massetto struggles to maintain his cover as the repressed nunnery erupts in a whirlwind of pansexual horniness, substance abuse, and wicked revelry.

Teeming with comedic talent, Jeff Baena’s THE LITTLE HOURS is adapted from some of the bawdier tales in Boccaccio’s The Decameron and shot on location in Italy. The dialogue, however, is completely fresh and modern having been improvised on set. What could be a jarring juxtaposition in the hands of a less experienced group, instead comes off as genuine and authentic thanks to the wildly talented cast. Baena’s own secret weapon is his deep knowledge and clear affection for the source material – while a film major in college, he minored in Medieval Literature.
