Event Description

Tracing the history of major LGBTQ events across the globe.

Stonewall 50, the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the original Stonewall bar rebellion in 1969 and the birth of the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement will soon be happening in New York City, bringing millions of tourists to Manhattan.  The annual last Sunday in June march has long been the most important LGBTQ parade in the world, but it will hold special importance this year, combining with the LGBTQ mega-event World Pride celebrations, an event rooted originally in fighting religious oppression by the Vatican in the year 2000.

What are LGBTQ Mega-Events, how did they originate, and are they still connected to the civil rights movement or have they developed into something all their own?  From circuit parties, to World Pride, Euro-Pride, the Gay Games and Out Games, and other LGBTQ mega-events, this dynamic photo lecture will look at the origins of this phenomena. Pride and these other events are often some of them the largest individual annual gatherings of any kind in some countries, having an important economic impact on the tourism sector while reshaping a destination’s global profile.
