(2016) dir Robert Greene w/Kate Lyn Sheil [112 min; DCP]
Though it may be unfair to call the films of Robert Greene provocations, he is, at least, challenging the traditional ideas of non-fiction cinema. In his previous film, Actress (which premiered at the Brattle last year), he presented an ostensibly unmanipulated documentary about a middle-aged actress and the dissolution of her marriage. By the end, without explicitly doing so, questions are raised about control and manipulation by the subject of the film.

In his newest film, Greene raises some of the same issues but also brings the filmmaker – and even the audience – into the issues of subjectivity vs objectivity. The course of the film once again is the portrait of an actress, this time up-and-comer Kate Lyn Sheil (You’re NextQueen of Earth) who is preparing for a challenging role. She is to play Christine Chubbuck, a Florida reporter who shot herself live, on-air in 1974. KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE follows the actress as she goes through the process of preparing to play the role – from hair, makeup and costume tests, to meeting her fellow cast members, to contacting the friends and co-workers of the real Christine, to the inevitable search for a mythic tape of the actual suicide. The challenge of playing a demanding role based on a real person is the apparent focus, but the film begins to interweave elements that make the viewer question what is documented and what is constructed about the events they are watching. In the end it reflects back on itself to question the motivations for making, and indeed watching, a film about such a horrific event.
