Event Description

Like many aspects of the pandemic, schooling looked radically different over the past year and a half as physical buildings were shuttered and students participated in a collective online experiment. The results of remote learning, expanded use of technology and learning loss are coming into focus as the pandemic continues to reshape American education. But for students, parents and advocates alike, what and how students should learn, and how to test what skills they’ve mastered, continues to be a raging debate. Here in Chicago many neighborhood schools have languished. And while the introduction of selective enrollment schools have given some kids opportunities, racial and socio-economic inequities persist.

Join WBEZ and the University of Chicago’s Center for Effective Government for a virtual event to discuss our public school systems and consider other ways to do school. During this event we will hear about other models of education that emphasize student mastery and cultivate a love of learning.

We also want to hear from you! Share your bold ideas and suggestions for education reform by registering today.

Event participants include:

  • Susie An, Education Reporter, WBEZ (moderator)

  • Tim Knowles, President, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching

  • Susan Patrick, President and CEO, Aurora Institute

  • Juan Carlos Ocon, Principal, Benito Juarez Community Academy

  • Andrea Shaffer, Faculty Director, Chicago Waldorf School

  • Imran Khan, CEO & Co-Founder, Embarc Inc.
