A voyage in musical chiaroscuro, I Viaggi di Caravaggio can be heard on the recent CD release on MV Cremona. Among the composers in the program are some of the greatest masters of the early seicento – Sances, Merula, Kapsberger, Mazzocchi, and others.

Caravaggio was a revolutionary and and confrontational painter whose canvasses absorbed the naturalism and discoveries of the ways of light made by his scientist contemporaries. His sense of realism included his choice of models for various female saints, sundry “fallen women” – prostitutes who were lovers not only of the artist, but of various cardinals as well. The paintings offer a perspective on the complicated life of the artist, his time, and the thin line that separates sacred from profane passion in the baroque aesthetic.

Like the paintings, the musical works were composed with a masterful chiaroscuro in which sacred scenes are rendered with intense changes of vocal color between light and dark, each little motet offering a drama of theatrical dimensions. At first impression, the program is a straightforward presentation of early seventeenth-century sacred music, but like the great master whom we honor with the music of his time, the concert hides a more dramatic, complex, and subversive truth than that which first meets the eye.

 I Viaggi di Caravaggio, un viaggio tra chiaroscuro musicale e dialogo tra musica ed arte, è un progetto originale dei musicisti Diego Cantalupi, liutista italiano, e Jessica Gould, soprano americana, che può essere sentito sul CD sull’etichetta MV Cremona. I compositori figurano maestri del primo seicento quali Sances, Merula, Kapsberger, Mazzocchi, ed altri. Caravaggio è stato un pittore rivoluzionario e conflittuale che ha saputo incorporare nelle sue opere il naturalismo derivato delle scoperte contemporanee della rivoluzione scientifica. 

Il suo senso di realismo ha coinvolto la scelta delle modelle – varie sante femminili, che in realtà sono state, per la maggior parte, “donne cadute”– prostitute e amanti dell’artista e vari cardinali. I quadri danno una prospettiva sulla vita complessa dell’artista, sulla sua epoca, e sul filo fragile tra estasi sacro e profano. Come i quadri, i brani musicali scelti sono composti con un chiaroscuro musicale in cui le scene sacre sono dipinte con cambiamenti intensi tra colori effimeri e profondi, e ogni piccolo mottetto offre un dramma di dimensioni teatrali. Ad una prima impressione, il disco è tradizionale, ma come il grande maestro che noi onoriamo con la musica della sua epoca, il programma nasconde un risvolto più drammatico, complesso, e sovversivo di quello che può apparire ad uno sguardo superficiale.
