The year is 1971 and Brazil faces the tightening grip of a military dictatorship. The Paivas – Rubens (Selton Mello), Eunice (Fernanda Montenegro) and their five children – live in a rented house by the beach, their door always open to friends. The affection and humor they share marks its own subtle form of resistance to the oppression that hangs over their country. One day, Rubens, a former congressman and outspoken critic of the dictatorship, is taken from his home and told nothing more than that he must give a “deposition” to authorities. He ultimately disappears. In the aftermath, Eunice is forced to reinvent herself and carve out a new future for her family. Award-winning Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles (Central Station, The Motorcycle Diaries) was drawn to the story through Paiva’s son Marcelo’s memoir of the same name for its gripping first-person testament. I’M STILL HERE premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it won the SIGNIS Award and the Golden Osella prize for Best Screenplay. The film is Brazil’s submission for the International Feature Film Oscar.
