The Trio
The outstanding musical interplay of Hilario's stellar Trio makes a journey through various music styles from Afro-Cuban chants to Danzon, Bolero, Cha-Cha-Cha in a Latin jazz show with Afro-Cuban music and elements of Modern Jazz. Together, bassist Roberto Occhipinti and drummer Mark Kelso are an additional gift for this amazing Trio led by the Toronto based Hilario Duran, one of the most innovative and genuine piano virtuosos of our times.The Trio is one of Hilario's most expressive musical formations; this musical format offers a glimpse of future directions for Cuban-inflected music. One of his albums, "New Danzon," won the Juno Award for Best Jazz Album of the Year 2005, and "Motion," the second album of the Trio, was Juno nominated. The music of the Trio is a revelation, a tried, tested well-oiled machine that exudes camaraderie and sixth sense. Duran has perfect soul mates in drummer Mark Kelso and bassist Roberto Occhipinti. The empathy between them is not only the key to resolution; it helps take the music to an enthralling high. Hilario Duran Trio has become a significant force in the Canadian jazz scene.The Trio has had notable performances in Rochester, Cleveland, New Orleans, and New York. They also toured in Europe, performing in Italy, The Ronnie Scott's, Bimhuis (Amsterdam), World of Basses, Jazz Podium de tor, Lux Nijmegen, and many more.
Mark Kelso: Drums - Acclaimed drummer Mark Kelso is not only is he a skilled musician who plays drums and an assortment of percussion, his ability to play a wide variety of musical styles helped him become one of Canada's mostsought-after drummers. In addition, Kelso has amassed a solid reputation as a versatile and musical performer who is now one of the first call players in the country. Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, 2-time Juno nominee, Mark Kelso has grown up in the musically rich city of Toronto, Canada. Not only is he a skilled musician who plays the drums, but he has also established himself as a singer, producer, composer and bandleader as well. Here are a few of the artists mark has worked with - Pat Metheny, Donny McCaslin, David Clayton-Thomas (BS&T), Holly Cole, Hilario Duran, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Michael Bublé, Olivia Newton John, Dave Grusin, Larry Coryell, Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Natalie MacMaster, Richard Page (Mr. Mister), Susan Tedeschi, Gino Vannelli, Mike Stern, Peter Murphy (Bauhaus) and many more. Currently Mark has recorded on over 350 recordings.
Roberto Occhipinti: Bass - Imagination, versatility and technical excellence are adjectives that describe Canadian bassist, Mr. Occhipinti. Long recognized for his chameleon-like ability to dig into almost any musical form, it is his love and enthusiasm for Latin jazz that he burns brightest. Bassist Roberto Occhipinti was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He comes from a prominent musical family that includes two guitarists: younger brother Michael and cousin David. Michael Occhipinti is a well-known sideman and co-founder of NOJO -- the Neufeld-Occhipinti Jazz Orchestra. Also a well-respected producer, Occhipinti has worked for Hilario Durán, Dafnis Prieto, Quartetto Gelato, and the Shurum Burum Jazz Circus, and has been a music director and orchestra contractor for films and commercials. He received an Artist Diploma from the University of Toronto in 1999, and in 2001, as part of Bunnett's Spirits of Havana, he shared the Juno award for Best Global Album. In 2005 he received his own Juno as producer of Durán's New Danzon CD. Other awards include the National Jazz Award for Producer of the Year in 2005 and 2006, and Acoustic Group of the Year for his own band in 2005. In 2006 he received a SOCAN award for the cartoon series George Shrinks.
