Event Description

Revisit the American icon’s life story through photos, documents, ephemera, and miscellany.

From pictures of running with the bulls in Spain to candid letters he wrote to his wives and his publishers, Ernest Hemingway: Artifacts From a Life, paints an intimate portrait of the literary titan as we’ve never seen him before.

How did he look as a laughing child or young soldier? What did he say in his most intimate correspondence? Did the train tickets he held on his way from France to Spain, or across the American Midwest, transform him—what kind of notes, for future stories or otherwise, did he take on these journeys?

Drawing on his compilation of 400 objects, author and manager of the Hemingway Estate, Michael Katakis, explores how the objects that shaped Hemingway’s day-to-day offer unprecedented insight to the lived experience of the man behind the legend. Katakis will speak about his discoveries with Declan Kiely, The New York Public Library’s Director of Special Collections and Exhibitions.
