Get Lit November Book Club: Mona Awad with musical guest Dear Dear

Join WNYC's Alison Stewart and Mona Awad for a live conversation about her newest book, Rouge, followed by a special musical performance from Dear Dear.

The New York Public Library and WNYC—two indispensable New York institutions—are partnering to host a book club that brings New Yorkers together and fosters community.

The November title is Mona Awad's Rouge - surreal descent into the dark side of beauty, envy, grief, and the complicated love between mothers and daughters.

With black humor and seductive horror, Rouge explores the cult-like nature of the beauty industry—as well as the danger of internalizing its pitiless gaze. Brimming with California sunshine and blood-red rose petals, Rouge holds up a warped mirror to our relationship with mortality, our collective fixation with the surface, and the wondrous, deep longing that might lie beneath

Throughout the month, All of It host Alison Stewart and the Library will accompany readers, providing touchpoints on-air and on social media at @allofitwnyc and @nypl. Borrow the book (and more than 300,000 others) for free through the Library’s e-reader app SimplyE, available for iOS and Android devices.

Join Stewart, the author, and readers everywhere for a live conversation, in-person or online, on Monday, November 27 at 6 PM. The conversation will be followed by a special performance from Dear Dear.

To join in person | Please be sure to register for an In-Person Ticket. Doors will open 30 minutes before the program. For free events, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance, but registration does not guarantee admission. All registered seats are released shortly before start time, and seats may become available at that time. A standby line will form 30 minutes before the program.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mona Awad is the author of the novels All’s Well, Bunny, and 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl. Bunny was a finalist for a Goodreads Choice Award and the New England Book Award. It was named a Best Book of 2019 by TIME, Vogue, and the New York Public Library. It is currently being developed for film with Bad Robot Productions. All’s Well was a finalist for a Goodreads Choice Award. 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl was shortlisted for the Giller Prize. Awad’s forthcoming novel Rouge, is being adapted for film by Fremantle and Sinestra. This spring, Margaret Atwood named Awad her ‘literary heir’ in The New York Times’s T Magazine. She teaches fiction in the creative writing program at Syracuse University and is based in Boston.

ABOUT THE PERFORMER

Born in Canada to a parents deeply immersed in both the ethos and business of music, Dear Dear (Chase Cohl) spent much of her youth on the road with the Rolling Stones, citing Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood as her “style icons” to this day. She picked up piano before eventually moving on to guitar and banjo during her college days as a poetry major in New York City where she devoured the works of Rothenberg, Miller, Rimbaud, and others. Simultaneously, she drew on a lifelong passion for sewing to create Littledoe - the Vogue-endorsed early progenitor of the modern Boho movement sported by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, the characters of Schitt’s Creek and other fashion icons, while also penning countless songs.
