Event Description

Join WNYC's Alison Stewart and Megha Majumdar for a live conversation about her newest book A Guardian and a Thief, followed by a special musical performance from Purbayan Chatterjee.

The New York Public Library and WNYC—two indispensable New York institutions—are partnering to host a book club that brings New Yorkers together and fosters community.

The March title is Megha Majumdar's A Guardian and a Thief - an electrifying new novel in which two families seeking to protect their children must battle each other in a city ravaged by climate change and food scarcity.

In a near-future Kolkata beset by flooding and famine, Ma, her two-year-old daughter, and her elderly father are just days from leaving the collapsing city behind to join Ma’s husband in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After procuring long-awaited visas from the consulate, they pack their bags for the flight to America. But in the morning they awaken to discover that Ma’s purse, containing their treasured immigration documents, has been stolen.

Set over the course of one week, A Guardian and a Thief tells two stories: the story of Ma’s frantic search for the thief while keeping hunger at bay during a worsening food shortage; and the story of Boomba, the thief, whose desperation to care for his family drives him to commit a series of escalating crimes whose consequences he cannot fathom. With stunning control and command, Megha Majumdar paints a kaleidoscopic portrait of two families, each operating from a place of ferocious love and undefeated hope, each discovering how far they will go to secure their children’s future as they stave off encroaching catastrophe.

A masterful new work from one of the most exciting voices of her generation.

ABOUT THE PERFORMER

Purbayan Chatterjee is one of India’s leading sitar virtuosos. A child prodigy, he received the President of India Award for Best Instrumentalist at the age of 15, marking the beginning of a career that now spans more than two decades of international performance. Deeply rooted in the guru-shishya tradition of Indian classical music, Chatterjee has earned recognition for both preserving raga lineage and expanding its contemporary expression through global collaboration.

His discography reflects both classical rigor and stylistic curiosity. Early recordings established him as a formidable interpreter of khayal-based raga performance, while subsequent projects broadened his reach. His work spans traditional raga explorations, live ensemble recordings, and globally oriented studio projects that situate the sitar within contemporary rhythmic and harmonic frameworks. Collaborations with Ustad Zakir Hussain, Herbie Hancock, Béla Fleck, Diane Reeves, Antonio Sánchez, Michael League, Jordan Rudess, Shankar Mahadevan, Javed Ali, and more are all part of Chatterjee’s continually expansive résumé.

Across stages, recordings, and mentorship, Purbayan Chatterjee continues to redefine what it means to be a classical Indian musician in a global century. Feathered Creatures, his new album with five-time GRAMMY Award-winning guitarist, composer, and producer Mark Lettieri will be released June 5.
