严歌苓出生于上海,从 12 岁开始在解放军文工团当舞蹈演员。 她写过 30 多本书,获过 30 多项文学和电影和电视奖。 她的许多作品被中国主要电影导演改编为影视作品。 她的作品被翻译成 21 种语言。


马凯琳是一位现居纽约的作家和专门研究中国电影的电影学者。她拥有华盛顿大学中国文学硕士学位。她曾任教于北京中国研究中心她的著作有小说【姐妹物语】(英文版是Excess Baggage)以及【中国千禧数字一代:八零后独立电影人访谈录】。

Author Geling Yan speaks with Karen Ma about her work as a novelist and the importance of free expression. 


Geling Yan, born in Shanghai, has written over 30 books and won more than 30 literature and film awards. Many of her books have been adapted for film or television. Recently the subject of challenges to her work, the author joins us for a conversation on her new novel Milati: 米拉蒂 and the importance of free expression. She joins moderator Karen Ma, local writer and film scholar, to discuss their work. The conversation will explore their writing, work style, and what has motivated each author through difficult moments in their writing journeys. This program will be conducted in Mandarin.

This event is part of The New York Public Library’s World Literature Festival, which celebrates books and writers from around the world and reflects the languages spoken in our communities. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS 


Geling Yan was born in Shanghai and served as a dancer in a People’s Liberation Army entertainment troupe starting at age 12. She has written over 30 books and won over 30 literature and film awards. Many of her works have been adapted for film and television by major Chinese film directors. Her work has been translated into 21 languages.


Karen Ma is a New York-based writer and film scholar specializing in Chinese cinema. She has a master’s degree in Chinese literature from the University of Washington. Previously, she taught at The Beijing Center of Chinese Studies. She is author of the novel Excess Baggage and China’s Millennial Digital Generation: Conversation with China’s Balinghou Indie Filmmakers.
