The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown, also known as the ā€œHardest Working Man In Show Business,ā€ left behind a legacy that will be remembered as long as there is music to play. Ever the perfectionist, James Brown always led one of the tightest acts ever musically... and this Tribute follows in those footsteps. Started by trumpeter and music mentor Farnell Newton, Funklandia was created to showcase the past, present, and future of Portlandā€™s funk scene.

Emphasizing community empowerment, the festivities will highlight high-quality, live musical performances from homegrown talent. Trumpeter Farnell Newton is one of the most versatile musicians in the Northwest, playing straight ahead jazz, smooth jazz, Latin music, soul, hip hop, funk and more.

In the last few years, Farnell has toured with 3-time Grammy winning singer/songwriter Jill Scott and with the Legendary Rhinestone Rockstar Bassist Bootsy Collins. In previous years, Farnell has performed with great musical artists, including George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic Dumpstaphunk, The Nth Power, Lettuce, Karl Denson, Fred Wesley, Stevie Wonder, and many others.
