A public rededication ceremony will be held on National Flag Day, June 14, 2016, 10 a.m., to mark the relocation of Pittsburgh’s historic Flag Monument to Flagstaff Hill.
Pittsburgh’s Flag Monument was originally placed at the entrance to Phipps Conservatory and dedicated on June 14, 1927, the 150th anniversary of the American Flag. More than 188,163 local school children raised funds for the monument by donating one penny each for construction. The granite and bronze monument, which was designed by Pittsburgh architect Harvey A. Schwab, was moved in 1967 to a setting next to the Westinghouse Memorial on Circuit Drive.
The new location at Flagstaff Hill will provide greater access to and a more fitting location for this important piece of Pittsburgh history. Local veterans will help lead the rededication ceremony, which will include presentation of the colors and the raising of the American flag above the newly placed monument.
