Event Description

“Some build fences to keep people out. Others, to keep us in it.”

It’s the 1950s in the Hill District. The Maxson family is making it any way they can. Troy works collecting trash, Rose keeps the home together and their son Cory dreams of football. Nothing stays the same forever, and the people on the edges are the first to feel it. Eventually, we all have to wrestle with death. Pittsburgh playwright August Wilson adapted his Tony award and Pulitzer Prize drama for a powerhouse movie filmed right here in Pittsburgh.

Directed and starring Denzel Washington with the award winning Viola Davis

Plus: The Living Legacy of August Wilson

Internationally acclaimed Actor, Director and Playwright Mark Clayton Southers once worked at a local steel mill. Mentored by August Wilson, Mark later became the renowned founder of Pittsburgh Playwrights’ Theater Company, served as the Artistic Director of Theater Initiatives at the August Wilson Center,  and has over a dozen playwriting credits to his name. The Oaks is honored to have him as a guest to discuss the inspiration for his amazing journey and prolific career.
