This Tony Award-winning musical is the story of an eccentric and dysfunctional, but loving, Jewish family in 1979. The father, Marvin, is blessed with a caring wife named Trina and a young son, Jason. Nevertheless he leaves them for a man called Whizzer, and Trina ends up romantically involved with the family psychiatrist. Young Jason is stuck in the middle. Included in this non-traditional family circle are the kind-hearted lesbian neighbors, Dr. Charlotte and Cordelia. When Marvin's lover Whizzer is diagnosed with AIDS, the entire family must put aside their issues and come together.
Told almost entirely in song by a very talented cast, this is a story about love, family, marriage, compassion and friendship. It's a reminder of the progress that's been made in understanding and acceptance since the early 1980s, progress that is under threat today.
