Description de l'atelier
Dans cet atelier, les participants fabriqueront une lanterne moderne en utilisant le même matériel et les mêmes outils que les ferblantiers auraient utilisés il y a 250 ans. La lanterne moderne est essentiellement une feuille de ferblanc percée suivant un motif artistique qui est ensuite serré ensemble pour former un tambour. Une bougie est ensuite placée à l'intérieur pour afficher un motif lumineux. Une lanterne historique aurait eu un sommet conique et une porte pour empêcher le vent de souffler la bougie lors du transport de maison en maison. Les participants peuvent également avoir du temps et du matériel supplémentaire pour fabriquer une râpe à épices en utilisant les mêmes techniques qu'ils ont utilisées pour fabriquer la lanterne.

Biographie du facilitateur
Fabrice Siaux est enseignant d'école et ferblantier historique amateur. Il a commencé ce passe-temps historique lors d'un rendez-vous de la traite des fourrures où un autre ferblantier offrait des ateliers. Étant donné que le ferblantier n'est pas un métier particulièrement populaire, Fabrice a décidé de le ramener à Winnipeg. Il est ferblantier depuis 5 ans et la plupart des techniques que Fabrice a dû apprendre ont venu de manuels historiques et par essais et erreurs. Fabrice essaie toujours de rechercher et de créer des objets perdus avec le temps.

Workshop Description
In this workshop, participants will be making a modern lantern using the same material and tools as Tinsmiths would have used 250 years ago. The modern lantern is essentially a pierced sheet of tin following an artistic pattern that is then clamped together to form a drum. A candle is then placed inside to display a lighted pattern. A historic lantern would have had a cone top and a door to keep the wind from blowing out the candle when transporting from house to house. Participants may also have time and extra material to make a spice grater using some of the same techniques used to make the lantern.

Facilitor's Biography
Fabrice Siaux is a schoolteacher and amateur historical tinsmith. He started this historical hobby during a Fur Trade Rendezvous where another tinsmith was offering workshops. Being that tinsmithing is not a trade that's particularly popular, Fabrice decided to bring it back to Winnipeg. He has been tinsmithing for roughly 5 years now and most of the techniques Fabrice had to learn were through historic textbooks and by trial and error. Fabrice is always trying to research and create items that were lost to time.
