1941. USA. Directed by John Ford. Screenplay by Philip Dunne, based on the novel by Richard Llewellyn. With Roddy McDowall, Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O’Hara. The dreadful, dangerous life of a Welsh coal mining family as seen through the eyes of Huw, the youngest member of the clan. Though the work is hazardous to body and soul, with many men either succumbing to illness or buried in mine collapses, the Morgan family remains committed to their ancestral occupation—while quietly hoping their youngest will have a better life away from the mines. Added to the National Film Registry in 1990. Preserved by The Museum of Modern Art with support from the Celeste Bartos Fund for Film Preservation. 119 min.
