Tol’able David

1921. USA. Directed by Henry King. Screenplay by King, Edmund Goulding, based on the story by Joseph Hergesheimer. With Richard Barthelmess, Gladys Hulette, Walter P. Lewis. David, a dreamy young man, idolizes his older brother Allen, who delivers the mail in their rural Virginia hometown. All is quiet and placid until the fugitive Hatburn clan arrives, forcing their way into the home of the boys’ grandfather. Pushed into a fight with one of the Hatburns, David turns the other cheek and is branded a coward, but his inner strength triumphs over brute force. MoMA’s film materials are derived from a nitrate print lent to the Museum in the 1940s by Richard Barthelmess. Preserved by MoMA with support from the National Film Preservation Foundation and the Film Foundation. Silent, with musical accompaniment. Approx. 85 min.
