Event Description

The podcast about books, culture, and what to read next talks to the noted sociologist about how the future of our democratic society might just be found inside a library.

Every week on The Librarian Is In, librarians Gwen Glazer and Frank Collerius discuss the books they're reading, pop culture and the literary zeitgeist, and the world of libraries—and they welcome special guests. Gwen is the recommendations librarian in the Readers Services unit, and Frank is the manager of Jefferson Market Library. For the first time they’re bringing their show to you, live and in person, with an extra special guest.

Eric Klinenberg is a sociologist and the co-author of the bestselling Modern Romance. In his latest book, Palaces for the People, Klinenberg argues that the path toward finding common purpose in our hyper-divisive times is through not only a rediscovery of shared values but of shared spaces: childcare centers, bookstores, houses of worship, parks, and, of course, libraries. To research the book, Klinenberg spent extensive time hanging out in branches—including NYPL branches—and discovering the crucial life support they brought to their communities. Gwen and Frank will talk with him about his time there and what he saw that gave him hope.
