Event Description

(1973) dir Peter Yates w/Robert Mitchum, Peter Boyle, Richard Jordan, Steven Keats [102 min; DCP]

THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE stars a magnificently hound-dog Robert Mitchum as the title character, a bottom-of-the-food-chain gangster struggling to make ends meet. When he is faced with the choice of informing or going to jail for yet another extended stretch, Eddie makes the obvious choice and turns songbird. But he desperately tries to avoid turning in the big bosses in the interest of saving his own neck. Also featuring Peter Boyle (playing amazingly against type) as a shady bartender and a multitude of gritty 1970s Boston locations – including a Bruins game at the old Boston Garden – THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE is a neo-noir classic and one of Mitchum’s finest hours.

Long unavailable in anything but the rarest of archival prints, the Brattle is proud to be the co-funder of this brand new digital print taken from the recent Criterion Collection restoration. And we’re excited to be able to screen it in celebration of what would have been Mitchum’s 100th birthday – August 6, 2017.
