Dirty Catfish Brass Band’s aim is to inspire, create and instigate – but, mostly, they just want you on your feet. Undeniably tight, yet reckless as hell, Dirty Catfish Brass Band deals in powerful phrasing and performances drenched with rhythm. Invoking the sounds of the New Orleans brass tradition, the collective dares to reimagine the streets of a prairie city as one that is hot, alive, and brimming with soul. Based in Winnipeg, MB, the crew strives to surprise, challenge, tickle and pay homage to the New Orleans tradition by giving it a new audience in an unsuspecting locale. In true Louisiana tradition, these boys stick to the spontaneity of festivals, alleyway performance and all around late nights. The band doesn’t ask permission to play, and the crowd certainly doesn’t ask them to stop.

These highly trained musicians collectively hold 12 University degrees, having studied at McGill University, University of Toronto, Humber College, University of Manitoba, Brandon University, Virginia Tech, University of Southern California, New England Conservatory, School for Improvised Music, University of Miami, and The Banff Centre.

Formed in the fall of 2011, Dirty Catfish Brass Band has become a constant at local festivals and venues within Winnipeg and the surrounding area, performing at The TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival (2012 - 2017), Winnipeg Fringe Festival (2012 - 2017), Festival du Voyager (2012, '14, '16), Canada Summer Games Festival (2017), Dauphin’s Countryfest (2014, '16), Winnipeg Folk Festival (2013, '15, '16, '17), Saskatoon Jazz Festival (2016), Regina Folk Festival (2016, '17), Brandon Jazz Festival (2017), Brandon Folk Music & Art Festival (2016), Trout Forest Music Festival (2015), Harvest Moon Festival (2015, '17), Grey Cup Festival (2015), and Prairie Wind Music Festival (2014) .

With their second release, 'Big Shiny Brass' (2016), - a six track EP of covers - Dirty Catfish Brass Band give a nod to fellow Winnipeggers The Guess Who and explore their own influences over a collection of pop tunes via Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and more. While 'Big Shiny Brass' is filled with the spirit of the New Orleans brass tradition, DCBB makes a point to take the music in a direction of their own.
