The Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist tells his side of the story behind the story of Edward Snowden—and how breaking it changed the way we understand surveillance in America. 

The Edward Snowden story is well-known, as are the accounts of it by journalists Laura Poitras and Glenn Greenwald. Now the third journalist who shared their Pulitzer Prize, Barton Gellman, recounts his part in bringing to light the trove of highly classified documents that forever changed the way we understand surveillance in America. The documents laid bare the American government's access to our every communication, and Gellman shares what it took to report his deep dive into the machinery of the surveillance state. 

In Dark Mirror Gellman recounts the puzzles, dilemmas and tumultuous events behind the scenes of his work. He discusses this and more with director of Columbia Journalism School’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism, Emily Bell.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Barton Gellman is a Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award winning journalist and a senior fellow at the Century Foundation. He was a local, national and foreign correspondent at The Washington Post for 21 years. His previous books include the bestselling Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency.
