Featuring ANIMAL CRACKERS
An art heist at a soiree celebrating the African explorer, Captain Spaulding (Groucho), causes chaos – especially since the Marx Brothers are on the case to try and recover the missing painting. Author Josh Frank joins us for this screening and to present his new book Giraffes on Horseback Salad: Salvador Dali, the Marx Brothers, and the Strangest Movie Never Made. It seems that, once upon a time, surrealist icon Salvador Dali and iconoclast comedians The Marx Brothers planned a never-made film that merged their sensibilities in a sublime mashup of absurdity, surrealism, slapstick, and wit. Rejected by the studio as too bizarre (surprise!), the original screenplay was thought lost… until now. Author and lost-film buff Josh Frank unearthed the original script, and Dali’s notes and sketches for the project, tucked away in museum archives. With comedian Tim Heidecker and Spanish comics creator Manuela Pertega, he’s re-created the film as a graphic novel in all its gorgeous full-color, cinematic, surreal glory.
