(1962) dir Agnès Varda w/Corinne Marchand [90 min; DCP] é
One of the greatest film composers of the 20th century passed away early this year and we are pleased to offer this brief tribute to him. The great Michel Legrand will always be remembered for his work with Jacques Demy but he also provides a lyrical background for work from filmmakers in the New Wave (here with Varda and Godard) as well as in Hollywood where he won an Oscar for his theme to THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR and his work on Barbra Streisand’s Yentl.
In Agnès Varda’s wonderful CLEO FROM 5 TO 7, a singer attempts to go about her normal business while waiting for the results of a fateful medical test. The deceptively simple premise allows Varda to dance through a multitude of topics from politics to sexism to mortality to the emotional nature of art. Legrand composed the music and songs for the film and appears as “Bob the Pianist” in one memorable sequence.
A "Double Feature" ticket additionally allows admission into the 9:30 PM screening of VIVRE SA VIE. No additional purchase is necessary.
