Public Art Contracts: An Attorney’s and Artist’s Perspective

In this workshop, attorney Louis E. Greenwald and artist Christopher Slatoff will discuss the legal issues and the steps necessary for an artist’s successful completion of a public art project. They will discuss common contract clauses in public art contracts, while focusing on ways to avoid pitfalls and common mistakes. They will also cover, among other things, fabrication, armatures, and appropriate mounting systems for installation of a public work of art. Presenters:

Louis E. Greenwald, Esq., a partner at the law firm Choi & Greenwald, practices employment law, contract law, and art law. Mr. Greenwald represents artists, art galleries, art foundries, art appraisers, and museums. Mr. Greenwald has extensive experience representing artists regarding public art projects, including contract review and negotiations and dispute resolution.

Christopher Slatoff is an artist who specializes in monumental sculpture for universities and churches. He has created many large scale sculptures, including for the University of Southern California, Pepperdine University, Fuller Theological Seminary, the City of Pasadena, and the Port District of San Diego. Mr. Slatoff teaches at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and lectures and teaches workshops at both the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. In the summers, he often teaches in Orvieto, Italy as part of Fuller’s Art and Theology Master’s Program.
