Are you a member of the new workforce, venture capitalist, tech visionary or a business owner? Interested in the changes and challenges of the new digital platform economy? Digital platforms, such as, Airbnb, Uber, Amazon, and others are playing an increasing role in the economy as they allow new entrants to offer content, goods, services or capital to the users of the platform. Though arguably they are creating new market opportunities, including some labor, they are also enrolling a "new" workforce and mobilizing "new" capital in the hands of private persons. Such new workforce and mobilized capital often has a disruptive effect on existing markets and operators, such as the taxi companies, and the traditional distributors of goods or the financial institutions. The term disruption designates this new phenomenon and is often associated with the challenge those entrants pose to the existing laws. Disruption examples are labor law in the case of Uber, copyright law and data protection law in the case of Google, and data protection in the case of Facebook. Though some are more disruptive than others, they all pose specific regulatory issues. The regulatory questions raised by the rapid rise of the platform span the entire map of the legal world, including work, tax, safety and health, quality and consumer protection, intellectual property, zoning, and anti-discrimination. This workshop identifies clusters of regulatory logic. The platform economy pushes us to look at the world of regulation with fresh eyes and to analyze regulatory requirements with these categories in mind. 1.5 MCLE credit available.

Presenter: Dorisa Shahmirzai Hanrahan, Esq. Dorisa chairs the Technology Transactions practice. She focuses her practice on technology-based transactions, including intellectual property acquisitions and licensing strategies for life sciences and technology companies. Dorisa’s representative transactions include: development, collaboration, license and material transfer agreements for a broad range of life science technologies including gene therapy, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics technologies; software, telecommunications and IT agreements, including technology development, licensing and marketing agreements; clinical trial agreements; and supply, distribution, sales representative and other supply-side agreements for biopharmaceuticals, diagnostic, medical device, telecommunications and software products. She handles investment agreements and IPO deals for technology companies. She also manages IP portfolios for companies internationally and domestically. She has been selected as a rising star in Super Lawyer Magazine for 2015, 2016.
