Which Business Model is Right for Me?

S Corps, B Corps, LLCs, 501(c)3s, and Fiscal Sponsorships: What Do These Mean, and Should One of These Describe Me?

What is the difference between a 501(c)3 and an S-Corporation? How does fiscal sponsorship work? Is an LLC or an LLP a better way to model your artistic activities? Join the Center for Cultural Innovation and California Lawyers for the Arts to learn about the menu of options for structuring the business side of your art project or enterprise.

This decision is no small matter as the right model should fit each artist's unique income strategy, financial management needs, ability to meet obligations, and potential partnerships. In addition, this workshop will describe California's newest type of for-profit corporate entity, called the Benefit Corporation, which became available in 2011 to allow for multi-bottom line efforts. (If you don't know what that means, this workshop may be for you!)

This workshop will feature arts-focused, legal insight from attorneys Corey Carter and Justin Sterling. The presenters cannot give legal advice, but they will provide a useful overview of the various ways that artists can structure their artistic ambitions.  

Presenters:

Corey Carter, Esq. is an attorney whose practice focuses on business formation, business transactions and contracts. Mr. Carter is admitted to practice in all courts of the State of California, the United States District Court for the Central District of California, and the United States Tax Court. He is a member of the Central District of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys Association (CDCBAA), California Lawyers for the Arts, and the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Francesco Barbera, Esq. is a Harvard Law graduate and corporate attorney with over 14 years of experience advising entrepreneurs, investors and organizations in all stages of development. Parking/Public Transportation:
You can park for $5 after 4 pm ON WEEKDAYS ONLY at Joe's Auto Parks/ Five-Star Parking Little Tokyo on 2nd Street between San Pedro & Central (entrance to garage is just past Pinkberry). This is the closest garage to the JACCC. There is also quite a bit of metered street parking in the area.
