Held in the intimate Wallace Hall, Caritas Concerts are warm, enjoyable evenings of food, wine, friendship and great music.


Wine and hors d'oeuvres at 6:30 PM, Music at 7 PM.


Wendy, Tami, Sara and Michael present an evening of opera, song, Broadway, operetta and folk music woven together for your delight.


Caritas is the Latin word for “charity,” and as the name suggests, all proceeds from these benefit concerts are given directly to charities that address social justice concerns.


This concert will benefit JESUIT REFUGEE SERVICE, an international Catholic organization with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support of an international office in Rome. 

JRS programs are found in 50 countries, providing assistance to: refugees in camps and cities, individuals displaced within their own countries, asylum seekers in cities, and to those held in detention centers. The main areas of work are in the field of education, emergency assistance, healthcare, livelihood activities and social services.

ARTISTS


Wendy Baker, soprano, has performed predominantly in the operatic and oratorio repertories, recently having had success singing works as wide-ranging as Bach, Mozart and Poulenc. She has a Master in Music Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music and she obtained a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance (cum laude) from Clayton State College. Ms. Baker has been sought out for the soprano solos in the Poulenc Gloria, Vivaldi Gloria, Faure Requiem, Rutter Requiem, Haydn’s Stabat Mater, and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music. In 2006, she sang the World Premiere of Laura Karpman’s Heebie Jeebies, commissioned by the Julliard Choral Union, at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Ms. Baker has sung the roles of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Suor Angelica in Suor Angelica, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Giuletta in I Capuletti e I Montecchi, Gilda in Rigoletto, Madame Heartthrob in The Impresario, and Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro. She has performed with the Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Savoyards, Regina Opera, and Caramoor and Anchorage Opera Studio Theatre, Young Artists Programs. 


Soprano Tami Petty made her Merkin Hall solo debut as the 2014 Winner of the Joy in Singing Award. Her Lincoln Center debut in 2010 singing the Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle with Voices of Ascension hailed her a "powerful soprano" by The New York Times and Classical Music Network declared, “Such a beauty and purity of tone is so rare that I could only listen in ethereal pleasure." She has also performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall with American Symphony Orchestra and at Avery Fisher Hall with the New York Philharmonic. Highlights from recent seasons include Woglinde in the final scene from Wagner’s Das Rheingold with the American Symphony Orchestra at the Bard Summerscape Festival, the title role in Puccini's Suor Angelica with Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra, Leonore in Beethoven's Fidelio with Opera Fort Collins, Vaughan Williams's A Sea Symphony with the Buffalo Philharmonic, Michael Tippett’s A Child of our Time with the Manchester Choral Society, Vaughan Williams’s Dona Nobis Pacem with the Choral Society of Grace Church of New York, and the Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss with the Fort Collins Symphony.


Sara Murphy, “a gorgeous, deep, dark mezzo-soprano” (New York Times), is a vocal artist who has been called “absolutely unforgettable for her versatility and ability to conquer any sensitive soul” (El Nacional, Dominican Republic). The fall of 2016 marks her European debut at Opera Theater of Rome as Ulrica in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera under the baton of Jesús López-Cobos. The current season concludes at Carnegie Hall in the role of Mary Magdalene in Elgar’s The Apostles with American Symphony Orchestra. Opera News named the recent release of Hindemith’s The Long Christmas Dinner in which Sara portrays Mother Bayard and Ermengarde one of the “Top Ten Opera Recordings of 2015.” Past season highlights include Ligeti’s Requiem, Schnittke’s Nagasaki and Hindemith’s The Long Christmas Dinner with American Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leon Botstein, and Verdi’s Otello, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mahler Symphony No. 8, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and Tchaikovsky’s Ode to Joy at Cincinnati May Festival conducted by James Conlon. Her portrayal of Britten’s Phaedra, Barber’s Dover Beach and High Priestess (Aida) at Ravinia with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Conlon won acclaim from the Chicago Tribune: “a rich, voluminous mezzo voice, excellent diction and an acute feeling for words and music.” Sara holds degrees from Oberlin College and Catholic University. She is a first-prize winner of the Oratorio Society of New York Solo Vocal Competition, and a grant recipient of Inter-Cities Performing Arts and the Wagner Society of New York.


Michael Sheetz was appointed Music Associate of the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in September 2012, after having joined the music staff in 2010. He serves as Music Director of the Wallace Hall Choir and Orchestra, Assistant Conductor of the Parish Community Choir, and provides conducting and keyboard support for the acclaimed Sacred Music in a Sacred Space concert series. Further duties include maintaining the church’s renowned music library, as well as contracting, playing, and overseeing many of the church’s liturgies throughout the year. A recording of his playing with the St. Ignatius Children’s Choirs was regarded as “consistently excellent” by the American Record Guide Review, and he recently produced and directed the liturgical music album “Hallelujah: The Wallace Hall Choir and Orchestra,” featuring music in both classical and contemporary styles. Michael holds a Master of Music and two Professional Studies degrees from Manhattan School of Music in accompanying and conducting. He is a graduate of Vassar College.


GENERAL CONCERT AND TICKET INFORMATION



  • DOORS OPEN at 6:30 PM for wine and hors d'oeuvres. Music starts at 7 PM

  • WILL CALL is available when the doors open at 6:30 PM inside the main doors of Wallace Hall.

  • CHILDREN seated on an adult's lap do not need a ticket. Children seated in a chair or pew need a ticket. 

  • We no longer offer tickets for sale or any ticket pickup at the Parish House Reception desk.

  • Audio and/or video recording and flash photography are not permitted during performances.


ACCESSIBILITY



  • Wallace Hall is not an accessible space. While there is a ramp entrance to the main sanctuary of the church, there is not an accessible entrance to Wallace Hall. Please call ahead (212-288-2520) to discuss any special seating requirements.


PARKING



  • Street parking can be difficult to find, but there are a number of parking garages nearby. There are garages on 83rd Street (between Park and Lexington Avenues) and 84th Street (between Park and Lexington Avenues), as well as near the Metropolitan Museum of Art.


RESTAURANTS



  • There are a number of fine and casual eating establishments located nearby on Madison Avenue (one block west of the church), Lexington Avenue (one block east of the church), Third Avenue (two blocks east of the church) and Second Avenue (three blocks east of the church).


 DIRECTIONS



  • The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola is easily reached via the 4, 5, and 6 subway lines (86th Street station), or buses on Madison, Lexington and Fifth Avenues, and on 86th Street.
