Somewhat overshadowed by the bombastic Avengers sequel that it leads into (and the hyperactive Spider-Man film that landed over the summer), this is one of the better origin stories to come down the superhero movie pipeline in years. Directed by indie stalwarts Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (making this the first Marvel film to be at least partially directed by a woman), CAPTAIN MARVEL features a joyous performance by Brie Larson as an alien warrior who has lost her identity but gained incredible powers. She finds herself at the center of an intergalactic conflict when she crash lands on Earth and discovers evidence that she once had a life here and that not all is as it seems.
