Event Description

Go behind Capote’s 1966 true-crime classic with actors and writers reading from his archives.

In 1959 Truman Capote read about a quadruple homicide of the Clutter family on their farm in Holcomb, Kansas. He spent the next six years on assignment for The New Yorker traveling to the small town to reconstruct what happened—and why. His resulting “non-fiction novel,” In Cold Blood, became a national bestseller that has never gone out of print and been adapted into multiple movies and miniseries.

Truman Capote’s papers, including his extensive research notes and manuscript drafts of In Cold Blood, are held by The New York Public Library. Special guests perform readings from the trove to give you a close-up look at Capote’s writing process and the effects the work had, both on him and on all of those involved with his tragic tale.

The Richard B. Salomon Distinguished Lecture is made possible by an endowment established by family and friends of the late Richard B. Salomon.
