Event Description

CAIR-LA is celebrating its Fifth Annual Valley Banquet, themed Building Power, Overcoming Injustice at the Airtel Plaza Hotel on Saturday, March 21, 2020.

We hope you will join us for an inspiring program featuring political activist Linda Sarsour, comic relief Jeremy McLellan and more!

In 2019, Valley Banquet drew more than 400 community members and friends from throughout Southern California to celebrate the work of CAIR-LA and learn about upcoming projects, services and political climate impacting our communities in Northern Los Angeles County.

We hope you will join us for an evening of motivational speeches, connecting with the community and learning about the work of CAIR-LA.

We look forward to seeing you and your families!

Linda Sarsour is an award-winning racial justice and civil rights activist, community organizer, every Islamophobe's worst nightmare and mother of three. She is a Palestinian-Muslim-American born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She is the former Executive Director of the Arab American Association of New York and the co-founder of the first Muslim online organizing platform, MPower Change. She is a member of the Justice League NYC, a leading force of activists, artists, youth and formerly incarcerated individuals committed to criminal justice reform through direct action and policy advocacy. Linda was one of the national co-chairs of the largest single-day protest in US history, the Women’s March on Washington. She has been named amongst 500 of the most influential Muslims in the world.

Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Jeremy McLellan is a rising star in the standup comedy world. He was just honored as a "New Face of Comedy" at the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and won the 2015 and 2016 Charleston Standup Comedy Competition and was named Best Local Comic in the Charleston City Paper. A devout Christian with a passion for social justice, Jeremy is a staple at interfaith events around the world. He recently completed sold-out tours in the United States, UK, and Pakistan.

Basim Elkarra leads CAIR's efforts in the Sacramento Valley area to serve as a voice to its diverse and vibrant Muslim community. A majority of his efforts have gone to working with law enforcement, schools, and health care providers to ensure they receive diversity training about Islam and the Muslim community. He was honored by former Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante for his "Outstanding Community Service" and was described as "Devout and Dynamic" by the Sacramento Bee. Elkarra currently serves on the Mayor Kevin Johnson's Transition Team, American Civil Liberties Union-Sacramento Chapter Board, Sacramento Police Advisory Committee, and many more committees in Sacramento.
