Stop-motion animators Stephen and Timothy Quay (identical twins from Norristown, PA) live and work in London, but have found inspiration in Eastern European literature, music, and classic Czech animation. They have gained a reputation for the detail and dark humor in their work, as well as their reclusive personalities. Through miniaturization they create unforgettable worlds, suggestive of long-repressed childhood dreams. These three Quay masterworks, selected by Christopher Nolan, feature the nightmarish netherworld of Street of Crocodiles (1986); a porcelain doll’s exploration of imagination in The Comb (1991); broken pencils and lead shavings in In Absentia (2000). In addition, Christopher Nolan's short Quay (2015) reveals the inner workings of the Brothers’ studio. All shown in 35mm!
