Event Description

2019 • dir Sophie Huber w/Michael Cuscuna, Lou Donaldson, Robert Glasper, Herbie Hancock, Derrick Hodge, Norah Jones, Terrace Martin, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Wayne Shorter, Rudy Van Gelder, Don Was • 85 min • DCP

A group of contemporary jazz artists (including Robert Glasper, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter) gather to celebrate the music that they love while reflecting on the history of Blue Note Records, one of the most iconic labels of modern jazz. Featuring vintage performance clips of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, and more, BLUE NOTE: BEYOND THE NOTES is a remarkable history lesson about how two German-Jewish refugees (and childhood friends) helped to usher in and popularize modern jazz music. Of course, director Sophie Huber takes full advantage of a treasure trove of archival materials – studio recordings and outtakes, label founder Francis Wolff’s remarkable photography, Reid Miles’ iconic graphic design, live footage, and interviews – but the real heart of the film is the newly-filmed studio session that brings together current label head and legendary producer Don Was with an amazing set of Blue Note performers that span over 50 years of artistry.

“[A] damn-near immaculate music documentary.” - Leslie Felperin, The Guardian

“A Smart, Exhilarating Look at an Influential Label… gets at jazz’s joy and pain.” - Glenn Kenny, The New York Times (Critic’s Pick)
