Brooklyn-based writer Hari Ziyad celebrates the release of their debut memoir Black Boy Out of Time in a conversation with fellow writer Kiese Laymon. Reflecting on experiences of growing up Black and queer in the midwestern United States, Black Boy Out of Time unpacks the impact of incarceration and policing on their communities and explores the concept of abolition to imagine alternatives for community safety. Ziyad is also Editor in Chief of RaceBaitr and the subject of John Edmonds’ photograph Two Spirits, which is on view in our special exhibition John Edmonds: A Sidelong Glance. Kiese Laymon is a writer from Jackson, Mississippi and author of the critically-acclaimed book Heavy: An American Memoir.
