Event Description

True crime set during the Jim Crow era, in small town Florida.

In December 1957, the wife of a citrus baron is raped. The town sheriff, the infamous racist Willis McCall, quickly rounds up his suspects. But McCall ultimately turns his sights on Jesse Daniels, a white, mentally impaired nineteen-year-old. Soon Daniels is taken away to the state hospital and locked away without trial. Crusading journalist Mabel Norris Reese can't get over the case and its baffling outcome. She pursues the story for years, chasing down leads, hitting dead ends, and winning unlikely allies. The unspeakable truths behind a conspiracy that shocked a community into silence  slowly begin to surface. Gilbert King, winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction for The Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America, will be at Mid-Manhattan Library in time for the book's release in paperback.

Gilbert will be joined in conversation with Lee Adams, documentary filmmaker, journalist, and the host and producer of the VICE documentary series Minority Reports.
