Event Description

Naomi Klein and Martin Breum come to the Library for the second installation of the Arctic Imagination project, a brainstorm across the Atlantic Ocean about melting arctic ice and increasing temperatures in which artists exchange ideas and visions of the future of the globe. In only 100 years, the Arctic and the North Pole have been transformed from highly dangerous and mysterious peripheral areas into regions that need our protection and sense of responsibility. NYPL is joined by major libraries in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, and Nuuk in collaboration for this project. Klein is no stranger to the subject, and her 2015 book This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate argued that massively reducing our greenhouse emissions is our best chance to reduce gaping inequalities, re-imagine our broken democracies, and rebuild our gutted local economies. Martin Breum is a leading Arctic journalist based in Denmark, whose focus on climate research in Antarctica, Arctic security, and environmental politics position him as a perfect interlocutor for this conversation.
