Event Description

The winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award returns to the home of her personal archives to discuss her timeless novel.

Annie Proulx’s 1993 novel, The Shipping News, follows the story of a newspaper man, Quoyle, who returns to his hometown of Killick-Claw in Newfoundland after the deaths of his parents and wife. The novel, which was subsequently turned into a major motion picture, was instantly embraced as a modern classic depicting the everyday trials of life in a small town by the sea.

Proulx was in her fifties in when she published her first collection of short stories, Heart Songs, in 1988—it catapulted her into literary stardom. In the many books and stories that followed, Proulx has always maintained herself as one of our keenest observers of the natural world. From her short story “Brokeback Mountain” to Bird Cloud, a memoir about building her house on a ranch in Wyoming—her stories are as much about her characters as they are the place they inhabit. In a rare visit to the city, she discusses her life and work.
