Event Description

One of the most captivating storytellers of our time on why he loves fiction, luxury, and novels about the past.

Many are the business people, lawyers, and professionals who dream of giving it all up to follow their dreams and become a novelist, but internationally best-selling author Amor Towles is the one who made it happen. Towles, who worked in finance for twenty years before publishing his debut novel in 2012, shot to literary stardom when The Rules of Civility, a story about class and desire set in the upper echelons of 1930s New York society, captured the hearts of readers and critics alike. His 2016 novel, A Gentleman in Moscow, follows the emotional transformation of a man ordered to spend the rest of his life in the shabby attic of a luxury hotel.

Towles visits the Library to discuss his life and work, and the themes of privilege, access, and wealth, which are explored so vividly in the stories he has chosen to tell.
