The Music Gallery presents

Amirtha Kidambi & Lea Bertucci + Joyful Joyful + Memory Pearl

Doors 8:30pm / Concert 9pm

The duo of Amirtha Kidambi on vocals and Lea Bertucci on tapes and electronics takes a more integrated approach than simply filtering voice through electronic processing. Bertucci manipulates Kidambi’s voice through tactile methods with tape machine, including manual speed control by physically touching the reels as Kidambi’s live voice is fed through the machine. Kidambi reacts in turn with a vocal arsenal of timbral techniques, creating a visceral feedback loop of noise, processed, and polyphonic voices. Influenced equally by jazz, Carnatic and western classical vocal techniques, the duo takes a thoroughly freely improvised approach. Their album Phase Eclipse featuring studio improvisations along with a full live concert from The Kitchen, was released on Astral Spirits this past November.

Joyful Joyful are a Peterborough/Toronto-based duo whose strange and beautiful soundscapes have been quietly attracting notice since they began performing four years ago. Drawing on traditional, sacred, and experimental music, Joyful Joyful doesn’t sound like anything else. A thicket of cables and effects transforms a single, visceral voice into a shimmering and otherworldly chorus, making Joyful Joyful’s dense drone-hymns at once sorrowful, soaring, and deeply moving.

Memory Pearl is the solo project of Moshe Fisher-Rozenberg, best known as the drummer & synthesist of Absolutely Free. He works from a decidedly electronic foundation, creating blurred sonic landscapes that glisten with nostalgia. His palette is full of warm and saturated hues rife with allusions to assorted technological eras and electronic music idioms. His sonics encompass lush lyricism, intimate reminiscences, and the most dazzling bouquets of texture that surge with forward momentum. Memory Pearl offers a striking and emotionally potent portrait of the present moment.
