Event Description

The former editor of the New York Times and one of The New Yorker’s most esteemed reporters examine the ways in which news organizations old and new have navigated the changing tides of their business.

“There are not that many places left that do quality news well or ever aim to do it at all,” writes Jill Abramson, the former executive editor of the New York Times. “But these four can.” Those four are the Washington Post, the New York Times, BuzzFeed, and VICE, the subjects of her new book Merchants of Truth. Abramson spent two years with the leaders and staffs of the four companies to understand the recent history of the news media and its prospective future in the face of rapidly changing technologies, shifting business models, and a president who almost daily assails the mainstream media as fake news.

She will speak about her book with long-time friend and co-author of Strange Justice: The Selling of Clarence Thomas, investigative reporter Jane Mayer
