The Charlotte Special

Ride behind the Norfolk & Western Class J #611 on her first trip to Charlotte since 1994. Our train will depart from the North Carolina Transportation Museum at 7AM and will travel through the communities of Salisbury, China Grove, Landis, Kannapolis, Concord, and Harrisburg before passing through the Queen City.

Passengers will get a view of Charlotte's spectacular skyline before we continue south to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. You'll get a rare opportunity to ride the rails into the new Charlotte inter modal facility built between the runways and under the taxiways of the airport, where we will turn the entire train before returning north. Our estimated arrival back in Spencer is by noon. Passengers will not detrain in Charlotte.

• Boarding location: boarding will take place at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer,   NC. Boarding begins at 6:00 AM.


• The Charlotte Special departs Spencer at 7:00 am and returns at 12:00 pm.


• Complimentary snack and bottled water provided; commissary car available, and you may bring a small personal cooler.

It is served daily by the Crescent and Carolinian/Piedmont trains. - By Air -  Salisbury is located near two major airports. Charlotte, NC (CLT) and Greensboro, NC (GSO) both are served by multiple major airlines.
