Event Description

The true story of a teen from the Lower East Side who hitched a ride to Antarctica.

In 1928 Antarctica was still largely uncharted territory. No one knew what lay within its frozen depths. Americans were enthralled by Commander Richard Byrd’s planned expedition, with many young men longing to join the adventure. Only Billy Gawronski, New York City high schooler and the son of immigrants, jumped into the Hudson River and climbed aboard.

Documentary filmmaker and journalist Laurie Gwen Shapiro will be in conversation with Adam Langer, culture editor at the Forward, about this audacious stowaway and the era he represents.
