Siddhartha Mukherjee with Andrew Solomon: Song of the Cell

The best-selling author of The Emperor of All Maladies and The Gene dives deeper into the mysteries of the human body in his latest book, an exploration of cells and cellular medicine.

Siddhartha Mukherjee’s new book is the third in his exploration of what it means to be human. In The Song of the Cell, Mukherjee tells the story of how scientists discovered cells, began to understand them, and are now using that knowledge to create new humans. Traveling from the 1600s to the forefront of medical technology, Mukherjee shows how the discovery of cells—and the reframing of the human body as a cellular ecosystem—announced the birth of a new kind of medicine.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Siddhartha Mukherjee is the author of The Gene: An Intimate History, a #1 New York Times bestseller; The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction; and The Laws of Medicine. Mukherjee is an associate professor of medicine at Columbia University and a cancer physician and researcher. A Rhodes scholar, he graduated from Stanford University, University of Oxford, and Harvard Medical School. He has published articles in many journals, including Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine, and The New York Times Magazine, among many others.

Andrew Solomon is a writer and lecturer on politics, culture, and psychology; winner of the National Book Award; and an activist in LGBTQ rights, mental health, and the arts. He is Professor of Clinical Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry) at Columbia University Medical Center, Lecturer in Psychiatry at Yale University, and a former President of PEN American Center.
