This cult classic is one of the great masterpieces of Polish cinema. The elaborate, non-linear narrative begins with the supernatural and proceeds through the picaresque adventures of a young nobleman of the 17th century. We encounter phantoms, spirits, fiery gypsies, and dreamlike maidens. Adapted from a baroque novel by Jan Potocki, the beautiful black and white film incorporates flashbacks, interlocking stories-within-stories, and genres varying from gothic to historical to erotic. One of Jerry Garcia’s favorite films – it’s a must see on the big screen! Part of Martin Scorsese’s Masterpieces of Polish Cinema collection.
