Event Description
Sandra Day O'Connor and Madeleine Albright in Conversation with Anne-Marie Slaughter.

Sandra Day O'Connor and Madeleine Albright each made history when they became the first women ever to hold the position of Supreme Court Justice and Secretary of State, respectively. To honor these remarkable women and celebrate their groundbreaking careers, LIVE from the NYPL welcomes Albright and O'Connor to the stage for a conversation moderated by Anne-Marie Slaughter, the first woman to serve as Director of Policy Planning for the United States Department of State.

Sandra Day O’Connor was born in El Paso, Texas, and raised on the Lazy B Ranch. She attended Stanford University, where she took Wallace Stegner’s writing course. She began her public service in Phoenix, and was majority leader of the Arizona Senate before becoming a judge. O’Connor became the first female Supreme Court justice when President Reagan nominated her to the Court in 1981, where she served until 2006. She serves as Chancellor of the College of William & Mary, and is on the board of trustees of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Her latest book is Out Of Order.

Madeleine K. Albright is Chair of Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategy firm, and Chair of Albright Capital Management LLC, an investment advisory firm focused on emerging markets. In 1997, she was named the first female Secretary of State of the United States and became, at that time, the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. Formerly, Dr. Albright served as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations. She is a Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. In 2012, she was chosen by President Obama to receive the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in recognition of her contributions to international peace and democracy. Dr. Albright is the author of, most recently, Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 1937-1948.

Anne-Marie Slaughter is the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 2009–2011 she served as Director of Policy Planning for the United States Department of State, the first woman to hold that position. Upon leaving the State Department she received the Secretary's Distinguished Service Award, as well as a Meritorious Honor Award from the U.S. Agency for International Development and a Joint Civilian Service Commendation Award from the Supreme Allied Commander for Europe. Dr. Slaughter has written or edited six books, including The Idea That Is America: Keeping Faith With Our Values in a Dangerous World, and over 100 scholarly articles. She is a Contributing Editor at The Atlantic magazine, and frequent contributor to both mainstream and new media.
