ARTS ACADEMY CELEBRATES AND DEDICATES!

December 5, 2013 is a never-to-be-forgotten day for administrators, faculty, and students at Three Hills Arts Academy! As routine activities of teaching, rehearsing, office work, etc. were being carried out downstairs, professional piano movers from the Piano Gallery in Calgary rolled through the front doors a beautiful, brand new 5’ x 10” HAILUN grand piano on to the Academy stage.

What could be a more ideal gift to The Three Hills Arts Academy Society! The organization had completed 20 years of operation in June, 2013, with its two main focuses being Education and Performance. An added blessing is that the gift has been given by a local family, representing three pioneer families from the district.

On October 9, 2013 at the wonderful age of 98, Lydia (Tetz) Koch, Jacobson passed away under the tender care of the nursing staff at Whitehorn Village, Calgary. Lydia moved with her family to the Three Hills district in 1926, farming 7 miles southeast of town. On May 24, 1937 Lydia married Rudolph Koch, who had moved with his family to the Three Hills district in 1914. Interestingly, the couple were married in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, which is now the home of Three Hills Arts Academy.

Following years of farming, both west and east of town, the Kochs and their two children, Lorraine and Kenneth, moved to Calgary in 1945. Rudolph passed away in 1977. Another former distinguished Three Hills family, Art and Madge Jacobson and daughters, had moved to Calgary in June, 1960. Following Madge’s passing in 1981, Art and Lydia found renewed friendship and were married in April, 1982. The couple enjoyed 18 years of precious companionship, with Art passing away in February 1998.

Today, Lorraine Koch Maerz and her husband, Larry Maerz, also born and raised in Three Hills have retired in Three Hills, following outstanding careers in education and concertizing. In November, 2013, Lorraine fulfilled a life-long dream by purchasing a grand piano in memory of her mother and the estate. Unfortunately, Lorraine and Larry were unable to keep the new instrument in their home due to Lorraine’s health issues. The folks had anticipated this possibility and had made the decision to donate the piano to a worthy organization that would benefit by the gift. Three Hills Arts Academy Society is the grateful recipient of the beautiful grand piano.

An added bouquet of blessing is that China’s HAILUN piano, model HG 178, was awarded the “Acoustic Piano Line of the Year” for both 2012 and 2013. The award was given by the “Musical Merchandise Review”, the “Dealers Choice Award”. To attain such distinguished status over all other brand names, the HAILUN company, the only privately owned piano manufacturing company in all of China, is committed to achieving the highest level of craftsmanship possible. Each piano put on the market has the two leading qualities of the HAILUN piano are its rich, even tone, over all the registers of the keyboard and the touch, which is firm but also responsive. Then, the beauty of the piano, inside and out, is striking and appealing to the eye. Multi-laminated, birdseye maple is used in the inner and outer rim, the lid is attractively beveled, and with a weight of approximately 200-300 pounds (depending on the model) in the lid an exclusive hydraulic “help-system” has been installed to raise and lower the lid. The high-polished ebony finish on the instrument completes a picture of elegance, craftsmanship and To CELEBRATE the Academy’s 20 years of operation and to DEDICATE the gift of the HAILUN GRAND PIANO, The Three Hills Arts Academy is presenting a CONCERT with two performances: Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 13, at 3 p.m. Faculty and students, from elementary to advanced levels, will be showcased in the concert. The music disciplines represented will be in piano, flute, violin, and voice. The community is cordially invited to share in this special occasion.
