CALL TO ACTION
We the producers/sponsors of the (LE'MASQUE New Years Eve Masquerade Gala) are committed to continued our taking action within; a continued promoting of the UMDF, hence driving awareness of mitochondrial disease research and education, on behalf of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) and the thousands of people who battle mitochondrial disease on a daily basis. Although, LE'MASQUE is a fun and exciting event it is one with a serious underline purpose.
We the producers/proud sponsors feel compelled to stress the awareness of mitochondrial disease and its impact on children and adults and its links to more common illnesses such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, some cancers, and autism spectrum disorders. Mitochondria take the oxygen from the air that we breathe and the calories from food that we eat and convert it into the energy that allows all of our organs and systems within the body to function. They are powerhouses that produce the energy that we need to sustain life. If the mitochondria malfunctions it could impact any or all of our organs and systems. The brain may be impaired, vision or hearing may be lost, the heart may be weakened, there may be digestive problems – any system could be affected.
The symptoms range from mild to severe for each affected person. A greater understanding of mitochondrial disease and dysfunction could lead to treatments for a wide range of conditions and potentially help millions of people, worldwide.
