Event Description
IMMA Teens Open House Dublin

IMMA hosts a workshop for teens (13-18 years old) as part of the Irish Architecture Foundation's Open House Dublin 2015

Taking inspiration from the 17th-century architecture of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, join artist Doireann Ni Ghrioghair in exploring the visual language of the building. This afternoon workshop will involve photography and sculpture in investigating the various forms, shapes, motifs and their meaning. If it was built in the 1600s, then why are there Corinthian columns and stone corbels that look like they’re from ancient Greece? Why are there stone wreaths and various eccentric ornaments? Do they mean anything? Firstly, participants will engage in looking closely at the building itself and documenting various visual aspects of interest, examining different details and discussing. Back in the studio afterwards, participants will then engage in a playful, sculptural process of translating their images into 3D forms using various found materials. Using the fabricated fragments inspired by the museum’s building, larger constructions will be made that riff and improvise with the architecture of IMMA. Emphasis will be placed on an experimental, process-led approach to art-making, while observing familiar architecture in a fresh way.
