The 14^th­–century relocation of the papacy from Rome to Avignon provided ripe opportunity for both shock and satire. The Roman de Fauvel, an allegorical verse about an orange-hued donkey who becomes king, and whose marriage to Fortune results in the antichrist, is probably the best known work to come out of the tumult.
