The James Robert Jordan House
308 Grace Street (ca. 1907)
This classical revival house was built by James Robert Jordan, an early 20th century representative to the Virginia House of Delegates.
It is said that the high arches in the house were built to accommodate
“Jim Bob” Jordan riding his horse through the home
.
The Cofer-Dashiell House
111 N. Mason Street (1898)
Built for John I. Cofer, banker and member of town council, and his wife, Mary Cary Jordan Cofer. Their daughter, Segar Cofer Dashiell, became the town's beloved historian, writing newspaper columns for decades and penning "Smithfield: A Pictorial History." She lived in this home until she passed away in 2001 at the age of 100.
The Grove
220 Grace Street (1780s)
The Grove was built between 1780-90 for Thomas Pierce. This brick residence once stood in a grove of oak trees, which was cut down and sold to the Russian Navy during the Crimean War.
The building was once used as a boarding house and a hotel. It was restored in 1956 by Virginia Lieutenant Governor and Mrs. A.E.S. Stephens.

The Benjamin Chapman House (the Old Library)
This home was built in the typical Victorian style, but you couldn't tell that now. It was remodeled in the 1930s to its present hipped-roof Georgian style. Once used as the town's bakery, it was later served as our library.
The Berryman Mansion
This impressive Victorian features a ballroom on the third floor, a widow's walk at its peak, and an ornate gazebo overlooking the Pagan River.
It was built as a wedding gift for P. D. Gwaltney, Jr.'s daughter, and is sometimes referred to as the "Wedding Cake House."
205 S. Church Street (1882)
Built for the then-mayor of Smithfield and his wife during something of a building spree on South Church Street,
this home has a wonderful view of the Pagan River.
